Empowering Young Women for the Future with Penrith CBD Corporation

Six females students immerse in a full day of activities

Schools industry Partnership

On Thursday the 28th of March, Inspiring the Future teamed up with the Penrith CBD Corporation to run an exciting event “Empowering Young Women for the Future” in conjunction with International Women’s Day. Six female students, from Jamison High School and Caroline Chisolm College spent the entire day taking part in interactive, entertaining and informative activities. Inspiring the Future’s role was to secure three volunteers through its website, to help during the day.

An exciting start to the day was a practical session held at Penrith PCYC where the students learned about boxing, self-defence and light exercise.  Following that session and a short morning tea, the students took part in two worthwhile sessions with Inspiring the Future volunteers. Angela Maguire, the director of GAP Consultancy, spoke about how to choose your career direction and Genene Wilson, the Principal Financial Adviser from Finesse Financial Advisers, spoke about developing confidence in the workplace and beyond. At a lunch event in the Penrith RSL the students had an opportunity to meet with local politician Melissa McIntosh and to further interact with all the speakers of the day.

Following the luncheon, Martina Woodleigh from Schools Industry Partnership spoke to the girls about getting career ready by looking at resumes, cover letters and tips for applying for jobs. Gabby Benkovich from Judge Accountants and Lisa Garcia, a personal banker specialist from Westpac, then mentored the students on managing personal finances. In the evening, the students went to the hairdressers at Salon Kiin in Penrith to get their hair styled and were taught how to style hair on their own. The students wrapped up the day by going to Westfields to get dressed up and learn about and experience styling in preparation for job interviews and future employment.

It was a successful day and exciting to watch the students come out of their shells as they learned, interacted with adults and had fun. The feedback received from the students was phenomenal. They were extremely appreciative and thoroughly enjoyed their day. Many thanks to Penrith CBD Corporation for their collaboration and bringing other companies and schools together for this rewarding and enjoyable day.
