YOU CAN'T BE WHAT YOU CAN'T SEE

Broadening Career Horizons in Western Sydney

Schools Industry Partnership, Adrian Rhodes

Participation in career talks with volunteers from the world of work can broaden students’ career horizons, influence their future plans and subject choices, increase their self-confidence and motivate them to make improvements in academic attainment.

That’s what happened at Seven Hills High School on 12 March 2024 when thirteen inspiring women in tech related career pathways interacted informally with 85 female students from five secondary schools in the Blacktown region of Western Sydney.

The “Inspiring Women in Tech” event was facilitated by Inspiring the Future Australia in partnership with AWS InCommunities.  Many thanks for the amazing support provided by volunteer speakers from Amazon Web Services, Total Concept Industries, Schools Industry Partnership, Starry Arts, Transport for NSW, Alliance SI, Climatech, PwC and NextDC.

All volunteers stated that it was a wonderful opportunity for them to interact with students to share their life journey and help to expand their career choices.  One volunteer said that the event also emphasized the importance of engaging in direct conversation with children to understand and listen to their perspectives and insights.  They all stated that they would love to volunteer again for similar events in the future.
